The Man

Robin Henricus Maria van Emmerloot

A wise man in the East, with roots in the South

In 1995, white smoke rose from the chimney of the Canisius Wilhelmina hospital in Nijmegen. To this day, the reason remains a mystery, but it does mark the year I was born.

Until 2014, my daily routines took place in the Land van Maas en Waal, where I graduated from Pax Christi College in Druten. Even back then, I was rarely seen without my Nikon D5100, documenting the world around me.

Gloria Sine Labore Nulla
No glory without labor

Growing up in a working-class family, I learned early on that nothing comes for free. The Van Emmerloot family motto “Gloria sine labore nulla” is deeply ingrained in me.

As a first-generation student, this work ethic is what drove me to go beyond my home region. It led me to the ‘Far East’ of the Netherlands: Enschede. Here, I earned my Bachelor in Creative Technology and a teaching qualification (2014-2017). I was never one to just attend lectures; I immersed myself in the academic community, serving on committees, teaching workshops and writing as an editor for U-Today.

Challenging Education

My drive has always been the quality of education. With a minor in Teacher Training paired with my technical degree, I have always sought to combine technical knowledge with didactic application.

This approach was heavily shaped by my time working in Special Needs Education (VSO) at Panta Rhei College in Enschede. Working with these students taught me that education is never one-size-fits-all: it requires patience, customization, and a genuine eye for the individual behind the student.

The Sum of All Parts

Today, I continue that mission of challenging education at the University of Twente. As an advisor and educator, I focus on the latest trends in education, including the integration of technology like AI in the classroom.

That same family mentality of hard work now fuels my role as a representative of the union AOb and as a chairman of the OPUT at the University of Twente. Here, I advocate for the wellbeing and rights of university staff, believing that fair conditions are earned through dedicated effort.

And when all of that comes to rest, I find my time at home to explore my creative and hands-on sides, creating and making all sorts of things in the company of my two lovely cats.
